Oregon Newspaper Embezzlement: Eugene Weekly Set to Relaunch After Employee Theft

Eugene Weekly, a prominent alternative newspaper in Oregon, is gearing up to make a strong comeback next month after enduring significant challenges.

The publication was forced to lay off its entire staff due to the embezzlement of funds by a former employee.

However, through extensive fundraising and the support of the community, the print edition is scheduled to return on February 8.

Background: The Downfall

The difficulties for Eugene Weekly began just before the holiday season when it was revealed that over $100,000 in bills remained unpaid.

Additionally, it came to light that a former employee had misappropriated around $90,000 from the newspaper’s finances.

This betrayal resulted in the immediate termination of all ten staff members, which was a devastating outcome for a publication that has served the Eugene community since its inception in 1982.

Editor Camilla Mortensen conveyed the emotional upheaval experienced over the past few weeks.

“It has been both terrifying and wonderful,” she remarked, illustrating the struggles not just of managing a newspaper but also of reviving one. “I thought it was hard to run a paper.

It’s much harder to resurrect a paper,” she emphasized, acknowledging the significant challenges ahead.

Community Support and Fundraising

Despite these hardships, the response from the community has been heartwarming. Since December, Eugene Weekly has raised around $150,000, largely through a GoFundMe initiative.

Financial backing also flowed in from local businesses, artists, and dedicated readers who showed their solidarity.

Remarkably, donations were received from individuals as far away as Iowa and New York, highlighting the broader impact of the situation.

Mortensen noted, “People were so invested in helping us that it just really gives me hope for journalism at a time where I think a lot of people don’t have hope.”

The overwhelming support encouraged her and the remaining volunteers to forge ahead with the relaunch.

The Plan Going Forward

The planned relaunch will feature approximately 25,000 printed copies, and the editorial team is committed to maintaining weekly publications beyond the initial release.

In the meantime, former staff members have stepped up to volunteer their time to keep the newspaper’s online platform active, collaborating with journalism students from the University of Oregon and freelancers who have generously offered their contributions.

Mortensen is hopeful that, as the paper regains financial footing, she will be able to rehire former staff members.

Achieving this goal will depend on settling outstanding debts and creating a financially viable operational structure.

The Importance of Local Journalism

Eugene Weekly holds a vital place in its community, acting as a significant source of information at a time when many local news outlets are either diminishing or closing altogether.

The publication’s return is not only critical for its devoted readership but also represents a broader commitment to independent journalism.

The investigation led by the Eugene Police Department and forensic accountants into the embezzlement case is ongoing, ensuring accountability.

Nevertheless, the primary focus now is on rebuilding the publication and strengthening community ties through impactful journalism.

Conclusion

The upcoming relaunch of Eugene Weekly’s print edition serves as a testament to resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

The newspaper’s dedication to serving its community remains unwavering, bolstered by the support from readers and local businesses.

As Eugene Weekly prepares to return to newsstands, it embarks on a new chapter that promises to highlight essential local stories and engage the community.
