The hockey world is mourning the devastating loss of Johnny Gaudreau, an NHL star known for his incredible talent and kind-hearted nature, and his brother, Matthew Gaudreau.
The two were struck by a suspected drunk driver in New Jersey just hours before they were set to be groomsmen at their sister Katie’s wedding.
Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew, 29, were biking in Oldmans Township on Thursday evening when a Jeep Grand Cherokee fatally hit them.
The driver, Sean Higgins, 43, reportedly attempted to pass two slower vehicles but tragically collided with the brothers. Higgins has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide.
Heartbreaking Family and Community Reactions
The Gaudreau family, already close-knit, is left reeling from the loss of not just two beloved sons but also husbands, fathers, and brothers.
Their uncle, Jim Gaudreau, said in a heartfelt Facebook post: “Last night we lost two husbands, two fathers, two sons, two brothers… but truly two amazing humans.”
Johnny’s wife, Meredith, is left to care for their two young children, Noa and Johnny. Matthew’s wife is also expecting their baby, adding an even greater depth of heartbreak to this tragedy.
A Family Passion for Hockey
The Gaudreau brothers were incredibly close, sharing a deep love for hockey that started in their youth in South Jersey and extended into their professional lives.
Johnny Gaudreau was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2011 and had recently played for the Columbus Blue Jackets. His brother Matthew also made waves in the hockey world, coaching at their alma mater, Gloucester Catholic High School, before stepping down earlier this year.
At Boston College, where both brothers shined, their former coach, Jerry York, recalled how their bond pushed Johnny to NHL stardom.
He added: “Johnny and Matthew were more than just talented players. They were magnetic personalities in the locker room and on the rink. Their loss will be felt forever.”
The Drunk Driver: Sean Higgins
Sean Higgins, the man charged with killing the brothers, admitted to drinking five to six beers before the crash.
His reckless decision to drive under the influence not only cost two lives but left an entire community heartbroken.
Judge Michael Silvanio stated during his court appearance that Higgins faces up to 10 years in prison. Higgins, visibly stunned when informed he would remain in custody until his next court hearing, remarked: “So, I’m here until Thursday?”
Hockey World Pays Tribute
Johnny Gaudreau’s team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, released a touching statement: “Johnny was not only a great hockey player but also a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend. His impact on our team and sport was profound, but it pales in comparison to the indelible impression he left on everyone who knew him.”
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also honored Johnny, saying: “While Johnny’s infectious spirit for the game earned him the nickname ‘Johnny Hockey,’ he was more than just a dazzling player. He was a devoted father, a beloved teammate, and a friend to all who crossed his path.”
